Today we learned that our oldest lab has lost her sight. She also has developed several tumors. We also have a chocolate lab who is about two years younger. They both came from my uncle who breeds labs. So they are, essentially, sisters. They are very close. They don’t stray far from each other and you can visibly see them take care of one another. Getting Mimsey down the stairs of our house to the vet’s was a bit of a challenge today. Mind you, we didn’t know she was blind at the time but suspected something. So for the most part my dad carried her front and I carried her back. After we got her in the van you could see the distress this caused our other lab, Coco, by being left. While my Dad took Mimsey to the vet I sat and gave her some extra attention.
As soon as Dad and Mimsey got back Coco was right there at the gate waiting. I went down to help Mimsey out of the car and up the stairs. Understandably she was having a rough go at it. So I let Coco out to come greet her, thinking it might ease the situation. Not only did it do that, but after welcoming Mimsey back, Coco helped get her up the stairs. She got next to Mimsey and nudged her along. Stepping with her and getting her up the stairs. I was so surprised to see this little action. I sat with both of them when we all made it up stairs and just watched how happy they were to be back home together, in their comfort zone. And still now, I am so impressed by the connection they had. Anyways, it moved me and showed me how special these dogs, I’d really rather call them girls (that’s how we always talk to them) are. Very special.
